Responding to a Marine-based Oil Spill

Oil-only meltblown polypropylene sorbents are primarily used to clean up oil spills on water. They are hydrophobic (repel water) and oleophilic (have an affinity for oil). Standard meltblown polypropylene has an open fiber texture, which quickly attracts low surface tension fluids, such as oil, diesel, gasoline, etc. These products boast an average absorption rate of fifteen times their weight.

oil spill pads and booms

In the unfortunate event of a marine-based oil spill, mitigating the spread of contaminants and protecting the shoreline are both priority number one. Hopefully, a quick deployment of booms will provide both solutions.

Booms are cylindrical absorbent products that have a sock and net covering, a rope that runs the length of each section, and are filled with chopped post-industiral meltblown polypropylene waste. Snap hooks and o-rings are situated on each end and are used to link sections together, forming an absorbent barrier. If spilled oil is close to the shoreline, rolls are unrolled and staked into the ground.

Once the oil spill is contained, pads are deployed on the interior of the spill. They do most of the absorption work and may be accompanied by oil skimming and/or vacuum equipment. Responding to an oil spill with the proper equipment is determined by licensed, qualified environmental contractors.
