President Trump and Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi held a joint press conference on Thursday. The world leaders announced a trade and military alliance. The U.S. will be "increasing military sales to India by many billions of dollars," including providing F35 stealth fighters.
Trump discussed tariffs and the trade deficit between the two nations and announced an agreement to slash India's 30 to 70% tariffs, as well as the U.S.’s nearly $100 billion dollar trade deficit. "As a signal of good faith, Prime Minister Modi recently announced the reductions to India's unfair, very strong tariffs that limit U.S. access into the Indian market very strongly," the President stated. "Prime Minister Modi and I have agreed that we'll begin negotiations to address the long-running disparities that should have been taken care of over the last four years."
President Trump intends to close the deficit with exports of oil and liquid natural gas to India. He also announced an agreement to reform Indian laws to "welcome US nuclear technology." According to President Trump, the sale of nuclear technology is worth tens of billions of dollars. Additionally, the U.S. and India are "joining forces" to lead and control the A.I. industry. "We're going to remain at the top of the AI or artificial intelligence, I think, for a long time to come, and we're going to be working very closely with India and other countries on that," the President said.
Lastly, President Trump announced that India and the U.S. are going to "build one of the greatest trade routes in all of history," running "from India to Israel to Italy and onward to the United States” and “connecting our partners by ports, railways, and undersea cables."
President Trump closed his speech by saying, "The friendship between the United States and India is the strongest, I believe, it's ever been."
Importing products manufactured in India is a smart choice, as they have come to the tariff negotiation table with a serious plan to expand both import and export trade deals. Additionally, President Trump has vowed to eliminate the threat posed to shipping vessels that are no longer navigating the Suez Canal due to attacks by the Houthi terrorists in Yemen. Since November of 2023, their attacks have been unchecked and largely unreported. As a matter of fact, President Biden never even mentioned the ongoing problem. Once the threat is eliminated, shipping vessels will no longer need to reroute around the Cape of Good Hope, which has added ten days to the voyage.
